Research shows that about 10% of Americans suffer frequent headaches of at least 180 days per year. Also, 95% of headaches are primary headaches; migraine, cluster or tension-type, and the great majority of those are associated with muscles and joint problems of the neck.

Headache sufferers benefit with good chiropractic care

While there a number of different classifications of headaches, such as migraine, cluster or tension, most all fall into the catagory of tension-type. Therefore, the source of the headache often relates to joint imbalance and muscle tension. These headaches are also often referred to as cervico-genic, meaning they are brought about from conditions of the cervical spine.

The pain felt from a headache actually comes from the covering around the brain called the dura mater, not within the brain itself. It may also be from muscles around the head and face such as the thin muscles that lie at the back of the head and in the forhead. Injured or misaligned joints can trigger the local nerves to produce more tension in the muscles of the neck, head and face which ultimately can also create tension into the dura.

Regardless of the source or type of headache, chiropractic aides in releiving the muscle tension and restoring the proper movement and placement of the joints. This contributes to a decrease in the nerve signals which calms the muscles and tension. It also reduces the inflammation of the affected tissues and joints and allows for those tissues to heal and lessen the re-occurrence of the symptoms.
