As a health conscious individual you are probably aware of the ongoing challenge to understand the best nutritional practices for you and your family. That's where we can help!

Yes, there is an abundance of advice from everywhere you turn, unfortunately much of it is inaccurate and some even ill-advised. Relax - you have turned to the right source!

Dr. Wilson truly enjoys this field of healthcare and has extensive experience and training in nutrition and metabolism. Not only has he been studying nutrition for decades, given hundreds of lectures and presentations, but his formal continuing education includes hundreds of hours of current training and research - "I'm always studying or sharing some current nutritional research. Most importantly, I actually practice what I preach!"

While you can find helpful and continually updated information within these pages, we can best help with your nutritional and health-restorative needs in person. Our nutritional services include not only a thorough consultation but also accurate nutritional advice and specific supplement recommendations. There are a number of more accurate tests we can provide as well such as cholesterol and blood fats, Omega-3:Omega-6 ratio, comprehensive blood chemistry, and hormone panels for bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.

Help For Your Heart!

Nutrition and cardiovascular health go hand in hand. Even though there is more publicity than ever that addresses this, many changes are necessary before the prevalence of heart disease is brought even slightly under control. Furthermore, regardless of strong media influence, understand that medical intervention has failed to resolve or even improve the incidence of this leading cause of death of Americans for the past six decades. Unfortunately understanding the serious depth of problems brought about from our dietary habits, as well as declining physical activity, is just the beginning. Getting the vast majority of the population to re-create how they eat is an entirely different challenge.

The good news for you is that you are reading this and may consider yourself as not one of the majority, but ready to or already making a change. If that’s the case, you are likely aware of these important health concerns. Additionally there is expanding research and a growing body of science to validate and promote more natural means of cardiovascular health. This discussion is intended to impress upon you a better understanding of this disease and to emphasize our services designed to aid in your health. While I applaud you for having taken at least some initial steps (perhaps merely reading this), understand that for the society as a whole, truly effective results will require, in most cases, significant changes and modifications to what have become some very ingrained lifestyle habits as well as commercial icons and institutions.

Here are a few important topics that are discussed in more detail during my dietary consults and lectures. Dietary and supplement recommendations are a vital part of your treatment program.
  1. The condition which best describes the true underlying cause of cardiovascular disease is inflammation. Approximately 60% of calories from the average daily American diet are comprised of simple refined, processed foods that promote and drive inflammatory factors which promote and accelerate disease processes. Even though cholesterol is the most publicized dietary factor suggested in heart disease and strokes, the claim that it is a primary cause is most inaccurate. Cholesterol is important to keep in balance, but it is also a very essential component of our physiology. In fact cholesterol is so important that every single cell in the body has the ability to make it, and artificially lowering it too much has severe and even fatal health risks.
  2. While dietary fat often receives an unfavorable share of attention, understanding the make-up of the fats we should eat and why they are so important to our diet is crucial for improving our health. Contrary to some misguided recommendations of the past decades, low fat and even no fat diet trends had done more to the detriment of our health than had benefited. Two disastrous results of that trend were the replacement of natural and essential fats with either higher levels of sugars and simple refined carbohydrates, or the more serious health risk, the replacement with trans-fatty acids. Fats are not only part of a healthy diet, but essential fats are just that – essential. Two of the three essential fatty acids for human survival must be provided in our diet, but more important, the right balance of these fats is crucial. The ideal ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids has significance in three areas; cholesterol and blood fat balance, keeping the disease-promoting inflammatory factors in check, and providing the brain critically important fats for its function and survival.
  3. Somewhat central to the approaches of alternative medicine is supplementation. There are a number of benefits as well as specific recommendations for some individuals. Overall better health outcomes are well documented with supplementation and heart and blood health is certainly a key area. One metabolite found in blood that has been shown to be a strong predictor and a primary cause of cardiovascular disease is homocysteine. As harmful as this by-product of amino acid metabolism is, optimum supplementation of specific vitamins is a very effective and essential means of preventing disease. Another important nutrient for heart health is co-enzyme Q10. These are brief examples of a number of supplements that may be appropriate for individuals and of course proper health assessment and even specific blood tests are available to make accurate recommendations.

Getting accustomed to dietary changes is not as difficult as many perceive. The challenge is most often just understanding this confusing and complex topic. Not only have I been studying nutrition for years, but having spent 10 years in clinical research, I can offer a lot of accurate and up to date help. The first step is helping you better understand your body’s dietary needs, why they’re important and if you want, how it works. Call us Today to arrange a consultation and start living healthier!

Manage, Control, Prevent and Possibly Reverse Diabetes

The incidence of adult onset or type II diabetes is not only increasing in adults, but is becoming more prevalent in young adults and even children. Some statistics show that there has been a 600% increase in Americans diagnosed with diabetes over the past 10 years. Since there is no other cause for this disease than dietary factors, this rampant increase in affected individuals, especially of younger age range, is a testament to the severity of dietary problems we face.

Although it’s a most difficult disease to manage in more advanced cases, there is well documented success in treating and even reversing this disease with nutritional intervention. The most important thing is to not take diabetes for granted and act as soon as possible once a diagnosis is confirmed. Yet most important of all is to heed the essentials of good nutrition and commit to a lifetime of better dietary practices before early stages of this disease develop. This is especially important to implement for our young adults and children.

People with type II diabetes typically have a normal functioning pancreas and their bodies can adequately produce insulin which is the hormone that responds to our intake of sugars. When we eat a source of carbohydrate like bread or sugar, it gets digested and turned to glucose which goes into the blood. Our pancreas responds by pumping out some insulin which delivers the glucose into our cells for use. When our bodies are subject to excessively high levels of sugars and simple carbohydrates too frequently throughout the day, our cells develop ‘insulin resistance’. This is the first stage of diabetic change where our cells are not tolerant of insulin’s attempt to deliver glucose inside the cell.

As this lifestyle continues, the sugars and high insulin levels in the blood eventually create the condition of diabetes.  It’s kind of like the cells have given up and closed their doors for good when insulin comes knocking – “nope sorry, I’m full.” Too much sugar and insulin floating around in the blood then makes us very sick and in extreme case can even be fatal.

To treat this condition, the best course is to restore the normal ‘insulin sensitivity’ of your cells. This is where our nutritional assessment and supplement testing procedures can help provide specific recommendations that work to re-set normal cell response. The most important underlying change that needs to be made is with one’s diet. Reducing and bringing back to balance the proper carbohydrate intake is paramount to diabetes management and prevention.

I can’t emphasize enough how a better understanding of the body’s nutritional needs is necessary to making an effective and lasting change. As much as 40% of the calories of the average American daily diet are in excess from simple refined carbohydrates and sugars. While most patients I consult tell me they feel they eat “well”, it often surprises them when I can demonstrate how far off balance their diets really are. Another sugar source that has created staggering problems in our country is high fructose corn syrup. Regardless of the food industry’s defense of this product, it is seriously detrimental to our metabolism and the leading cause of the increase in diabetes incidence among our young.

We’re here to provide accurate assessment, education and a plan of action to start you on a path of better health. If you have diabetes, or are concerned about your symptoms or your family and children, please call us right away!
